Some 27 years ago a small group of people that had interest in history and how the fur traders and pioneers lived and played, got together and started reenacting by camping out with the same type of equipment and gear that was used in the 1780 to 1840 period and reenacting the games and crafts that our forefathers did, like throwing hawk and knife, lances, and shooting muzzleloading rifles in friendly competitions displaying their skills by making their own clothing and equipment, and that was the start of the Spring Mountain Free Trappers. We meet regularly for fun and games and once a year we set up a rendezvous complete with traders just as the fur trappers did, it was a way to sell their furs and restock their supplies, meet up with old friends and have a good time before heading back to the mountains.

At our meetings, which are monthly during the winter months and twice a month in the summer, in summer we meet up in the mountains in Lee Canyon and Lovell Canyon under forest service permits, in cooler months at places like Cactus Springs and Knob Hill under BLM permits. We often have potluck dinners where members can show off their dutch oven cooking skills - a great way to meet new friends and have a good time with fellow members. It is not required to dress or camp primitive, many members come for just the day and some bring their RV's. Also it is not reqwuired to compete in events - some members just like to watch and cheer their favorite skinner and just enjoy being out with good friends - this is a familty activity - children are always welcome and are encouraged to participate.

Our club is an incorporated non-profit insured club, which is supported by yearly dues and events fees. Some of the benefits of belonging to the club are black powder and supplies at group rates, Many of our members make and sell hand made clothing, camp gear, and custom made knives and hawks, and have skills such as gun repair and knowledge of the mountain men and where and how to get gear and supplies. Our dues are $25 a year, which includes your family and all children under 18 living at home. Our event fees are $5 for each member including juniors that compete. Prizes are awarded at each meet for each event, for each division mens, women's, and junior's. A high score overall each meet qualifies for a yearly shoot off for shooting and throw off for primitive events.

The Public is always welcome and Invited!
